Cogito har genomfört projektet Samtal om tillväxt under hösten 2015 och våren 2016. Projektet tar sin utgångspunkt i den debatt som pågått åtminstone sedan 70-talet om tillväxt och miljö, och som återintensifierats under senare år i takt med att resursförbrukningen ökar, planetens gränser överskrids och hotet om klimatförändringar blivit allt mer akut.
Att den ekonomiska tillväxten i världen hittills varit nära kopplad till ökad resursförbrukning är det få som ifrågasätter. Men hur ser framtiden ut? Kan vi klara miljöutmaningarna med fortsatt tillväxt? Är tillväxten till och med en förutsättning för att klara miljöproblemen? Eller om vi vänder på frågan: Vad händer med tillväxten om våra samhällen ska leva vidare inom de ramar som planetens gränser sätter? Hur går det med våra möjligheter till tillväxt inom planetens gränser om de fattiga ländernas befolkningar ska öka sin resursförbrukning till vår nivå? Och om vi inte har tillväxt, hur klarar vi då välfärden?

Diskussionen om miljö och tillväxt brukar inte alltid präglas av försök till förståelse för argumentationen och synsättet på respektive sidor. I Samtal om tillväxt vill Cogito ge utrymme för nyanser och visa på de olikheter i synsätt som finns. Vi har intervjuat ett antal olika personer – ledande debattörer, forskare och politiker – som på olika sätt ansetts kunna tillföra perspektiv till frågeställningarna och låtit var och en ge sina egna förklaringar till varför de ser på tillväxten som de gör. Alla har också fått svara på hur de resonerar kring kopplingen mellan tillväxt och miljö.
